At the beginning of 2023 we received generous support from a benefactor to supply 100 complimentary print-plus-digital subscriptions to a selection of intentional communities throughout the United States.
If your mailing label reads “BENEFACTOR SUB,” you have been one of these recipients.
(If you’re receiving a benefactor-supported digital-only subscription, that is a different program offered through our international partners, and it doesn’t expire yet.)
We offered some of these 2023 print subscriptions to be used by our partner organizations FIC and CohoUS to aid in their own fundraising, and the rest we selected based on recommendations and research.
This Winter 2023 edition of Communities is the final issue of those subscriptions. Fortunately, we have received funding to continue this program in 2024. However, the recipients will not all stay the same.
If you are receiving a print-plus-digital Benefactor-Supported Subscription, here are your options for continuing to receive Communities in 2024:
1. Pay for a subscription. You can either start a new subscription or renew your current one via your online account or via postal mail. Print-plus-digital subscriptions start at $30 per year (with options for $40 Supporter level, $50 Sustainer level, and/or additional donations). This is the most certain way to guarantee that you’ll continue to receive Communities in 2024.
2. Continue your group’s support of one of our partner organizations or start supporting them as part of a fundraising campaign in which they are offering some of these complimentary subscriptions (at ic.org/donate or cohousing.org/donate). We cannot guarantee that this will lead to your selection as one of recipients, since their (and our) allotment of these subscriptions is limited, but if you meet the criteria and make your contribution while subscriptions are still available through those campaigns, you will receive a subscription.
3. Contact us directly requesting an extension (based on financial need or other factors) of your complimentary subscription (at editor [AT] gen-us.net, or 330 Morgan St., Oberlin, OH 44074, or 541-937–5221 [Google voice/text]). If, after allotting subscriptions to those who’ve met other criteria to receive these subscriptions, we have sufficient subscriptions left to allocate, you will receive an extension of your subscription. It is very helpful for us to know how actively recipients desire to receive the magazine; those groups who respond will receive priority over those who don’t respond.
4. Do nothing. There is still a chance—but significantly lower than if you take any of the above steps—that we can continue your complimentary subscription, and that you will once again be chosen to receive one in 2024. However, if you do nothing, there is also a high chance that this will be your last issue.
